Gunfire Reported Near Ataoja Palace During Governor Adeleke’s Visit in Osogbo
Tension briefly heightened in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday after gunfire was reported near the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, while Governor Ademola Adeleke was visiting the monarch.
The incident occurred shortly after Adeleke arrived at the palace following his visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Osogbo, where he received his Certificate of Return after securing victory in the August 15 governorship election. According to reports, the governor was at the palace as part of engagements with the traditional institution.
Channels Television reported that an exchange of gunfire occurred between individuals suspected to be responsible for the incident and members of the governor's security team. The confrontation reportedly lasted for several minutes and caused residents and traders in the surrounding area to move away from the scene for safety.
The Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed that an incident occurred but said the circumstances were still being considered. He suggested that the incident might have involved rival groups rather than an attack specifically targeting the governor. The state police command had not provided a further official account at the time of the report.
The development comes shortly after the conclusion of the Osun governorship election, during which concerns over political violence featured prominently. On the same day, Governor Adeleke announced plans for a ₦500 million Election Violence Victims Endowment Fund and scholarships for children and dependants of people who lost their lives in election-related violence.
The reported incident has renewed attention on the need for continued security and restraint as Osun moves beyond the election period. Authorities and political stakeholders will be expected to work together to prevent further incidents and maintain public confidence in the state's democratic process.
