2027: Kwankwaso Explains Decision to Join Obi on NDC Presidential Ticket
Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has explained why he chose to work with Peter Obi ahead of Nigeria's 2027 presidential election, saying the partnership is driven by a shared vision for the country's future.
Kwankwaso, who is set to contest as Obi's running mate on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, made the remarks as political parties formally entered the campaign period for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
According to the former governor, the decision followed his assessment of the challenges facing Nigeria and the need for a different approach to governance. He identified rising living costs, unemployment, insecurity and the difficulties faced by businesses among the issues requiring urgent attention.
Kwankwaso also pointed to education, healthcare, infrastructure and institutional reform as areas where he believes greater investment and accountability are needed. He said the proposed partnership with Obi is intended to promote accountable governance, economic opportunity and greater inclusion.
Explaining the political alliance, Kwankwaso said it was not primarily based on regional or religious considerations. Instead, he presented the partnership as an effort to build what he described as a more accountable and inclusive system in which young Nigerians can find opportunities to build their futures within the country.
He also called on political actors and supporters to focus their campaigns on issues affecting citizens rather than divisive rhetoric. Among the issues likely to dominate the 2027 campaign are the economy, security, employment, education, healthcare and the management of public resources.
The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket will now seek to convince voters that its proposed approach offers a viable alternative ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Other political parties and candidates are also expected to intensify their campaigns as the election season progresses.
For voters, the coming months will provide an opportunity to examine the policies, records and proposals of the various political parties and candidates before making their choices.
