2027 Elections: Campaign Season Officially Begins as Parties Prepare for National Contest

Nigeria's political parties have officially entered the campaign period for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, marking a new phase in preparations for the country's next general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fixed August 19, 2026, as the commencement date for campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections. The presidential and federal legislative elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027. Campaigns for governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are expected to begin on September 9, 2026, ahead of the elections scheduled for February 6, 2027.

The formal opening of the campaign window is expected to increase political activities across the country as parties and candidates begin presenting their programmes and seeking support from voters. The ruling All Progressives Congress has said it is finalising a nationwide campaign programme, while opposition parties are also positioning themselves for the contest.

The beginning of the campaign season has also been accompanied by renewed calls for responsible political conduct. Presidential candidates and political parties recently signed a National Peace Accord committing themselves to issue-based campaigns and rejecting violence, hate speech, misinformation and personal attacks.

With the election now months away, issues such as the economy, security, employment, infrastructure, education and public accountability are expected to feature prominently in political debates. Voters will also have the opportunity to assess the records, policies and programmes presented by the different candidates before making their choices.

As campaign activities intensify, political actors and supporters are expected to respect Nigeria's electoral laws and allow voters to make their decisions freely and peacefully. The credibility of the 2027 elections will depend not only on electoral institutions but also on the conduct of political parties, candidates, supporters and citizens.

Advocacy Media Hub will continue to provide balanced and verified coverage of the 2027 election, with emphasis on facts, policies, electoral developments and issues that matter to voters.
